NEWARK, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Officials are searching for a suspect after a delivery man died while trying to stop a carjacking in New Jersey on Saturday.

Jhon Aponte Alarcon, 46, left his vehicle unattended on Bergen Street in Newark as he went to deliver packages, and at about 12:44 p.m. the suspect jumped in the driver's seat, cops said.

According to police, Alarcon held onto the car as the suspect accelerated, traveling south before slamming into a parked car and overturning, crushing Alarcon beneath it.

The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Alarcon was rushed to University Hospital but was later pronounced dead.

The investigation remains ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-TIPS-4EC.
