NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- A German shepherd attacked an NYPD officer on Staten Island on Thursday before the dog was fatally shot by a second officer, police said.

Officers were responding to a 911 call for an emotionally disturbed person on Comstock Avenue, near Domain Street, in Graniteville around 4:30 p.m. when the dog lunged at one of them, according to police.

The dog bit the officer in his hand and leg, police said.

During the confrontation, a second officer shot and killed the dog.
