NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- Christine Walsh wasn't expecting to leave with a new pet when she went to Central Park's dog meetup area around 63rd Street earlier this month, but when she stumbled across an animal that she said was "discarded like garbage," she knew she had to step up.

"Can you imagine just being at that age, being dumped in a park, in 95 degree weather," Walsh told 1010 WINS. "She was either dumped because she was old and someone didn't want to take care of her, or they knew that she had a disease."

After taking Lady to the vet, it was discovered that she is approximately 15-years-old, has a microchip from Colorado in 2010 that was never registered and was left in the park in a stupor. She was overmedicated, heavily sedated and placed on high-dose narcotic painkillers, according to Walsh.

Among Lady's list of health issues is cancer. Walsh said that she began undergoing chemotherapy treatments and is doing well.

"I keep telling myself I'm going to foster her until," Walsh said. "Now the until, I don't know what that means."

A GoFundMe was set up to help with Lady's expensive medical expenses has raised over $21,000 of its $30,000 goal.

Lady’s GoFundMe is gofund.me/60e2241b.
