NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A mechanic working inside an elevator in the Bronx was killed after it fell and pinned him down Thursday morning, police said.
Officials were called to the scene at 9:35 a.m., where the 25-year-old was working on the elevator in an apartment building located at 133 East Clarke Place in Mount Eden, when it fell.
First responders found the man unconscious and were able to pull him from the shaft, authorities said.
EMS then rushed him to Bronx Lebanon Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
A preliminary investigation by the city's buildings departments indicated that elevator mechanics were performing permitted modernization work on the elevator, which was out of service at the time it fell.
"One of the mechanics has passed away from their injuries related to this incident, and a second mechanic was injured," the department wrote on Twitter.
An investigation remains ongoing.
