NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — The FAA is investigating a close call at JFK Airport as a London-bound American Airlines jet crossed a runway where a Delta 737 was taking off for the Dominican Republic Friday night.

The scary incident happened around 8:45 p.m. Just as the Delta flight had reached a speed of 115 miles per hour, the takeoff was aborted.

The American Airlines Flight later took off for London and arrived on time, but the Delta flight returned to its gate.

The plane’s 145 passengers and six crew members waited out a 15-hour delay before heading to the Dominican Republic Saturday.

Incidents like the one that happened on Friday night are called runway incursions. The worst runway incursion in history occurred in 1977 when a pan-am Boeing 747 collided with a KLM Boeing 747 in the Canary Islands. All 583 passengers and crew were killed.
