NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A Long Island man was killed early Friday morning after driving into the back of a slowing tractor-trailer on the Cross Bronx Expressway, the NYPD said.
Police responded to a report of a vehicle collision on the eastbound Cross Bronx Expressway near Jerome Avenue at about 1:53 a.m., authorities said.
An investigation found that a 2022 Freightliner Tandem tractor-trailer driving in the center lane and operated by a 49-year-old man began to slow down ahead of heavy traffic.
As the tractor-trailer decelerated, a 2018 Chevrolet Trax collided directly into the back of the slowing vehicle.
Richard Edwards, 38, of Hempstead, was operating the Chevrolet.
Responding EMS transported Edwards to St. Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead, police said.
The 49-year-old tractor-trailer driver stayed at the scene and there have been no arrests, authorities said.
Officials said that the initial congestion that made the 49-year-old to slow down was caused by an accident that occurred at the entrance ramp from Jerome Avenue onto the Cross Bronx Expressway.
The collision caused traffic delays during the morning commute along the northbound Cross Bronx Expressway, according to Notify NYC.
The investigation is ongoing.
