NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Flu cases are on the rise throughout New York, with New York City accounting for nearly half of the state's reported infections, according to the New York State Department of Health.
Between Dec. 21 and Dec. 28, a total of 24,513 flu cases were confirmed statewide. These cases reflect a 50% increase from the previous week statewide, when 16,342 cases were recorded. The positivity rate for flu tests also jumped to 45%, up from 20% just two weeks earlier.
Of these, 11,827 were recorded in New York City, while 9,264 cases were reported in nearby regions, including Long Island and Westchester.
In the week ending Dec. 21, New York City reported 7,966 positive cases, marking a 73% increase from the previous week. Influenza-like illness visits accounted for 8% of all weekly medical visits.
Hospitalizations have risen sharply as well. A total of 1,436 flu-related hospitalizations were reported during the week ending Dec. 28, marking a 111% increase compared to the previous week's 680 cases.
Outbreaks in healthcare facilities have more than doubled, with 114 outbreaks reported statewide this season, up from 55 just two weeks ago. This includes 25 outbreaks in nursing homes during the most recent week.
Health officials recommend getting vaccinated, practicing good hand hygiene, and staying home when feeling unwell to curb the spread of the virus.
