NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — G train service will be significantly impacted this summer by MTA signal modernization, leading to challenging commutes for regulars of the Brooklyn-Queens Crosstown Local.
The signal system on the G line is the same as when it opened 90 years ago, and the MTA said that it is using the summer to bring in the newest communications-based train control technology.
"This system is now past the end of its useful life," the MTA said. "A more modern, reliable signal system means more reliable service for the 160,000 riders who take the G each day."
Partial suspension of the G will allow work to be done 24/7 and reach completion faster than if it only could be worked on overnight or on weekends, the transit agency said. This pushes the MTA closer to its goal of completely upgrading the crosstown's signal system by 2027.
