NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A hammer-wielding attacker bashed a man over the head on a Bronx street Sunday afternoon, police said as they searched Monday for the at-large suspect.

The 24-year-old victim was talking with his girlfriend on Nelson Avenue, just south of West 172nd Street, in the Highbridge section around 12:45 p.m. when he was attacked from behind.

An unknown man snuck up and hit him in the head with the hammer before fleeing the scene on foot, police said.

The victim was hospitalized in stable condition at St. Barnabas Hospital.

No description or image of the suspect was immediately released by police.
