NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – It’s that time of year! City officials are again warning drivers to steer clear of Manhattan on nearly two-dozen “Gridlock Alert Days.”

The Department of Transportation on Thursday released its annual list of the days when traffic is expected to be at its slowest and most congested in Manhattan, especially in Midtown, where average speeds will be just 4 mph.

The DOT identified 20 Gridlock Alert Days between September and December. See the full list below.

The gridlock season usually starts with the U.N. General Assembly in September—this year it falls from Sept. 23 to Sept. 27—and also includes some of the busiest days during the holiday season in November and December.

The DOT urges drivers to opt for alternate modes of transportation like the subway, buses, commuter rail lines, ferries, cycling or walking.

“We strongly encourage New Yorkers and those in the region to travel by transit every day of the year—but it’s especially important during Gridlock Alert days,” NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez said in a statement.

The DOT will again create a temporary bike lane through the First Avenue tunnel between East 40th and 49th streets for the U.N. General Assembly—a lane it is working to make permanent. More info can be found at NYC.gov.
