NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A tow truck driver struck and killed a Bronx father on Monday afternoon before fleeing the crash scene, just steps from the victim's home, police said.
The NYPD continued to search Tuesday for the hit-and-run driver, who was operating a black Chevy Silverado truck with a tow hitch when they struck the 64-year-old victim in the Wakefield section.
The victim was crossing Bronxwood Avenue in the crosswalk of East 229th Street when he was hit by the vehicle around 12:30 p.m.
Surveillance video shows the truck driver run down the victim while making a left turn. The driver appears to slow down for a moment after the impact but ultimately takes off, the video shows.
The victim, identified as S.M. Akhtaruzzeman, died at NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi.
Akhtaruzzeman was killed about a block from his home, where he lived with his wife and one of his daughters.
His daughter, Israd Maria, remembered him as "very kind" and "very respectful."
"He loved all of us so much," she told WABC-TV. "He's so kind to the point that he'd even feed stray cats. I cannot tell you enough."
