NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Gov. Kathy Hochul activated New York State's Emergency Operations Center on Tuesday in response to an extreme heatwave set to impact the state over the next four days.

The New Jersey, Hudson Valley, and interior Connecticut suburbs are set to see an intense heat wave, with a Heat Advisory in effect until Thursday. Additionally, an Air Quality Alert has been issued for New York City and Lower Hudson Valley suburbs, lasting until 11 p.m. tonight, according to AccuWeather.

"I know New Yorkers are tough," Hochul said in a statement. "We think we can handle it all without breaking a sweat — and we probably will. But we'll be able to get through this because we'll be prepared. This is a historic heat wave that will be different by so many measurements. As I said, the real feels-like temperature is going to be over 100 degrees — even starting today in upstate New York."

NYC has a map of cooling centers (that will open Tuesday), as well as a map of places to hydrate, refresh and stay in the shade. Visit nyc.gov/beattheheat, or call 311, for more info. (Note: NYC outdoor pools don't open until June 27.)

Tuesday afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 80s to mid-90s, with high humidity pushing RealFeel temperatures in the upper 90s. Nights offer little relief, with lows only dropping to the low 72, keeping conditions warm and sticky.

Midtown can expect highs of 88 degrees today and Wednesday, surging to 92 on Thursday and peaking at 94 on Friday.

The northern and western suburbs will feel even hotter, with highs consistently in the mid-90s and RealFeel temperatures soaring over 100 degrees for much of the week.

The heat will continue through Friday, with the possibility of isolated thunderstorms in some areas during the afternoon.

Saturday will remain very warm and humid, with a mix of sun and clouds and a chance for thunderstorms, especially in regions north and west of New York City. Highs will still be in the upper 80s, but there may be slight relief from the extreme conditions for the rest of the weekend.
