Homeless man charged in fatal beating of man sweeping outside Harlem supermarket with plank of wood

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) Police charged a homeless man accused of beating a man sweeping the sidewalk outside a West Harlem supermarket with a plank of wood, authorities said Tuesday.

Just before noon on Friday, July 7, police responded to a 911 call of a male assaulted at the Food Universe supermarket in front of 538 West 138 St., cops said.

Upon arrival, officers observed 63-year-old Bernardo Gonzalez Perez lying on the ground, with trauma to the head.

EMS transported the victim to Mount Sinai Morningside Hospital where he was pronounced deceased on Tuesday, July 11.

The city Medical Examiner deemed the death a homicide on July 13.

Officials charged 48-year-old Carlos Ramirez with assault for beating the victim with a "large plank of wood," according to a criminal complaint.

The investigation remains ongoing.
