NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Gristedes Foods CEO John Catsimatidis and a group of other investors plan to launch a new baseball team to replace the Staten Island Yankees, according to a report.

The Staten Island Yankees ceased operations at the end of last year amid the COVID-19 pandemic and a Minor League reorganization.

Since then, Major League Baseball acquired an Atlantic League franchise and plans to let an investment group that includes Catsimatidis and business mogul Dany Garcia operate it, the New York Post reported Wednesday.

The yet-to-be-named team will not be affiliated with any MLB team, according to the outlet.

The team will, however, play out of Richmond County Bank Ballpark, the outlet reported.
