NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A Long Island man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated after he struck a tow truck early Wednesday morning, critically injuring the truck's driver, police said.

The 57-year-old Oyster Bay man was driving a Mercedes-Benz west on the Long Island Expressway, near Motor Parkway, around 4:05 a.m. when he hit a 2020 Hino flatbed tow truck that was also traveling west on the expressway, Suffolk County police said.

His car flipped into the median after the crash, police said. He was taken to a nearby hospital with minor injuries, according to police.

The tow truck driver, a 37-year-old man from Medford, was ejected from the truck during the crash, the department said. He was helicoptered to Stony Brook University Hospital in critical condition, police said.

The Mercedes-Benz driver, who has been charged with driving while intoxicated, is expected to appear in court on Thursday, according to police.

Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call the department's Major Case Unit at 631-852-6555.
