HAUPPAUGE, N.Y. (1010 WINS) -- A Long Island man has been sentenced to 18 years in prison for the rape and attempted murder of a woman last year.

On April 25, 2020, Mark Reyes, 44 of Medford, was in a Kings Park home with a woman who he previously knew and her two kids, according to authorities.

Police said Reyes got into an argument with the woman, took her phone and turned off her Wi-Fi and other electronics so she couldn't call 911.

According to authorities, Reyes assaulted and raped the woman, and at times threatened her wife a knife, saying he would kill her or hurt her and her kids.

The woman was held overnight by Reyes by tying her wrist to his, according to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office.

The following morning, the woman asked Reyes for her phone in order to call out of work, officials said. But she also was able to send messages to friends, who got in contact with police.

Officials said Reyes saw the messages, and then again threatened to kill the woman, this time saying it in front of her kids.

The woman told one of her kids to run to a neighbor's home, who then called 911, according to the DA. The woman also set off her car's panic alarm, which led to Reyes stabbing her in the face multiple times.

The victim eventually escaped from the home and was able to get to the neighbor's house, where her two kids also were, according to authorities.

Officials said Reyes fled the home on foot and kicked in the back door of a nearby home.

Suffolk officers were able to enter that home and rescue a 77-year-old woman while Reyes was barricaded upstairs.

Negotiations lasted eight hours before Reyes was taken into custody.

"This was a nightmare for the victim and her family. Nothing can take away the pain and trauma this individual inflicted, but this is a significant prison sentence that holds him accountable for his actions," said Suffolk DA Tim Sini.

Reyes pleaded guilty in July to a long list of charges that included attempted murder, rape, assault, burglary and more.
