NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man was slashed across the face Tuesday evening at an Upper Manhattan subway station in the latest unprovoked attack in the transit system.

The 27-year-old victim was slashed by another man around 6:30 p.m. as he waited for a 1 train at the W. 168th Street station in Washington Heights, police said.

He was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.

The attacker, believed to be in his 30s, fled the scene, according to police.

There was still blood on the mezzanine floor Wednesday morning as NYPD officers patrolled the station.

NYPD officers will soon be joined by the department's top brass during their patrols. According to reports, chiefs and deputy chiefs will now be required to go into the transit system as part of Mayor Eric Adams' plan to combat crime.
