NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A Queens man faces animal cruelty and other charges after he allegedly killed his former girlfriend’s cat by stretching the pet in what the Queens D.A. called one of the most violent deaths she's seen.
Jalen Gonzalez, 23, allegedly pulled the cat by her head and hind leg, leaving her with a partial internal decapitation and other injuries, according to Queens D.A. Melinda Katz.
“This animal endured one of the most gratuitously violent deaths that we have ever seen in the borough of Queens,” Katz said in a statement Tuesday, adding, "No animal or person should ever suffer this way."
Prosecutors allege Gonzalez, of Woodhaven, was upset with his then-girlfriend and took it out on her cat, Kitty, in the early morning hours of Jan. 12.
Gonzalez allegedly became inebriated and refused to leave her home that night. At one point, he grabbed her leg, prompting her to flee the apartment and call her family for help, prosecutors said.
When she returned with her uncle, they found Gonzalez holding her cat, who he allegedly stretched apart, according to prosecutors, who said the ceiling, walls and floor of the room were covered in blood.
Gonzalez was arrested at the scene by members of the NYPD. He was arraigned Tuesday on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, attempted assault in the third degree and harassment in the third degree. He faces up to two years in jail if convicted.
Katz called for stronger animal cruelty laws and said the charges aren't bail eligible under New York State law.
