Man charged after allegedly beating woman to death with crowbar in Upper Manhattan: NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 63-year-old man is facing charges after he allegedly beat a woman to death with a crowbar in Upper Manhattan earlier this month, according to officials.

At approximately 7 a.m., on Monday, June 14, police responded to a 911 call of a female assaulted at the corner of Fort Washington Avenue and West 163 Street in Washington Heights.


Upon arrival, officers observed 49-year-old Maria Kelly lying on the ground with trauma about the head.

EMS transported the Kelly to Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead on Friday, June 18, the NYPD said.

Further investigation revealed the victim was struck in the head with a crowbar by 63-year-old Julio Apontpolice said.

Aponte was subsequently taken into custody on Monday, June 14, at 7:12 a.m. and charged with attempted murder and assault.

An investigation remains ongoing.
