Fatal rush-hour stabbing at City Hall subway station was sparked by stepped-on shoes

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An argument about someone's shoes being stepped on aboard a rush-hour 6 train ended with a man being stabbed to death at the City Hall subway station in Lower Manhattan, police said.

The victim, 38, was stabbed around 8:30 a.m. on the 4/5/6 platform of the Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall/Chambers Street station.

According to the NYPD, he and his attacker got into an argument on a 6 train after the suspect stepped on the victim's shoes. The dispute between the two men escalated, leading to the stabbing on the train and platform.

The unidentified victim suffered multiple stab wounds to the chest. He was rushed in critical condition to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he died.

He was later identified as Sheldon John, of Brooklyn.

The stabber fled the scene and remained at large Friday. He was described as in his 20s or 30s, dressed in black and wearing black headphones.
