NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man died over the weekend after being run over by an NYPD vehicle as he laid on a road in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, cops announced on Monday.
It happened at about 4:37 p.m. on Saturday in front of the Queens Theater, located across from the park’s iconic Unisphere at 14 United Nations Avenue South.
An officer was driving a marked NYPD Ford Taurus west on United Nations Avenue South and ran over the man, who police said was lying face up in the roadway.
The officer remained at the scene and medics transported the man to New York-Presbyterian Queens Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The victim was not yet identified by police, and investigators are still determining why he was lying in the roadway and the other circumstances surrounding the incident.
Flushing Meadows Corona Park is currently hosting the 2025 U.S. Open tennis tournament, and police said that the vehicle was performing a routine patrol at the time of the collision. It was not immediately clear how many officers were in the car.
An investigation is ongoing.
