NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD is investigating after a 76-year-old man was fatally struck by a speeding car in Upper Manhattan last week authorities said Monday.
Just before 7 p.m., on Thursday, Oct. 19, police responded to a 911 call of a motor vehicle collision involving a pedestrian struck at the intersection of West 161st St. and Broadway, in Washington Heights.
Upon arrival, officers observed Julio Plaza unconscious and unresponsive, lying on the roadway with trauma to the head and body.
EMS transported Plaza to NYC Health + Hospitals/Harlem where he was pronounced dead.
Further investigation by the NYPD Highway District's Collision Investigation Squad determined that a a 27-year-old man driving a 2016 Dodge Charger was traveling southbound on Broadway in the left travel lane, approaching the intersection of West 161st Street, at an apparent high rate of speed.
Plaza was crossing Broadway in the southern marked crosswalk from west to east against the pedestrian signal when he was struck by the vehicle, which remained at the scene, officials said.
The driver of the Dodge Charger was not injured.
There have been no arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
