NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police officers took a distraught man into custody after he fired a gun outside an NYPD precinct during a standoff in the Bronx on Thursday, the department said.

Officers spotted the man inside a silver SUV parked in the middle of an intersection outside the 45th Precinct on Barkley Avenue in Throgs Neck around 7:20 a.m., NYPD officials said at a news briefing.

The man, who appeared to be having a "personal crisis," emerged through the SUV's sunroof holding a beer in one hand and a gun in the other, police said.

When the officers told the man to drop the gun, he appeared to be disoriented and refused. Members of the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit began to clear the area and establish a perimeter around the SUV, according to police.

At some point during the incident, the man fired a shot, hitting an unoccupied police van parked nearby, officials said.

Not long after, he dropped the gun into the SUV and laid back on the vehicle's roof, at which point officers took him into custody, police said.

The man, whose name and age weren't released, was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, according to police.

He was crying when he was taken into custody, police said. An investigation is ongoing.
