NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) -- An SUV thief was critically injured after smashing into a tractor-trailer truck—one of several crashes he caused while fleeing cops through the streets of the Bronx on Tuesday, police said.
Yonkers police notified the NYPD around 5 p.m. that a stolen Volkswagen SUV had crossed into the borough, but when NYPD officers tried to pull over the vehicle in the Melrose section, the driver fled.
The joyrider struck a box truck at East 143rd Street and Third Avenue in Mott Haven and then made his way to Hunts Point, where he crashed into the tractor-trailer near East 149th Street and Oak Point Avenue.

The suspect suffered head injuries in the collision and was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Lincoln in critical condition.
During the pursuit, an NYPD patrol car also struck a man on a scooter at East 138th Street and Brook Avenue in Mott Haven, according to video obtained by the Daily News.
The 27-year-old man suffered minor injuries in the crash. He was also taken to Lincoln and reportedly issued a summons by police for a moving violation.
