Man lied about apartment repairs in order to steal money, items: police

suspect sought
NYPD

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD is on the hunt for a person suspected of committing a string of robberies across the city under the guise of being at victims' apartments for repairs or inspections.

Police said eight incidents in connection to the person depicted in a new photo, with six occurring in the Bronx and two in northern Manhattan.

The first reported incident happened back on May 26 at 2975 White Plains Road. Police say a man knocked on a 76-year-old woman's door and told her he was there to repair a window.

Police say once inside, the man took $400, debit cards and her New York ID in her wallet before fleeing.

Across all of the reported crimes, the person said he was either there for repairs, an inspection or was a construction worker who needed to use a bathroom.

The person is said to have stolen about $840 in cash, 4 ID cards, several credit and debit cards, a cellphone, jewelry, handbags and more.

The suspect appears to have targeted senior citizens — with the victims being between the ages of 67 and 89, according to police.

The person allegedly struck four times between June 21 and 30 at Clinton Avenue, Unionport Road, Sedgwick Avenue and Trinity Avenue in the Bronx.

He then purportedly swindled two different victims in the same Harlem-area building at Amsterdam Avenue twice on July 5 within about an hour, police say.

The latest reported crime came on July 12 on Lincoln Avenue in the Bronx.

Police described the person as a light-skinned man who is about 35-42 years old, approximately 5'8" – 5'11" tall with a medium build. They say he wore a orange construction vest across all reported crimes.

Police say those with information can report it via NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477).
