NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A 19-year-old man was fatally shot during a robbery at a BJ's parking garage in Brooklyn on Thursday night, police said.

The victim, Dereck Chen, was in a parking garage elevator of the wholesale club on Shore Parkway in Bath Beach around 10:15 p.m. when the 18-year-old suspect stole his backpack.


Chen tried to get it back, and the struggled spilled into the parking area.

An employee said he heard someone say, "get off my bag," and then several shots rang out.

Chen, of Bensonhurst, was shot in the face and shoulder. He was transported to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where he died.

The unidentified suspect tried to flee, but he didn't make it far, running right into responding officers as he tried to exit the parking garage.

Charges against him are pending. Police said a gun was recovered at the scene.

Police described the robbery as random and don't believe the victim and suspect knew each other.

Detectives were still at the parking garage Friday morning as the investigation continued.
