NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A would-be thief took a 64-year-old straphanger’s cell phone after he fell asleep on the subway — but gave the phone back as the man was waking up, the NYPD said Friday.
The man was asleep on a 7 train near the 103rd Street—Corona Plaza subway station around 4:25 a.m. on Aug. 15 when another passenger approached him and took his phone, police said.
When the man woke up, the passenger returned his phone and fled the train, the NYPD said.
Police are now searching for the person who allegedly tried to take the phone: a man in his 20s who was last seen wearing a black T-shirt with a white logo, light blue jean shorts, black socks, black sneakers and a black hat emblazoned with the letter “W.”
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the NYPD’s Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS.
