NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD was searching Monday for a man who allegedly smeared feces on a mosque in Brooklyn earlier this month.

Police released images of the suspect they’re after in the suspected hate crime in Brooklyn Heights on the morning of Monday, March 9.

According to law enforcement sources, the man smeared feces on the door of a mosque on State Street, near Clinton Street, around 4:30 a.m.

He also allegedly threw pieces of a religious book, reportedly the Quran, on the front steps of the religious institution.

The suspect was last seen walking eastbound on State Street. He was wearing a black skullcap, black face mask, red sweatshirt, red sweatpants, and white and black sneakers, police said.

In a statement on social media, New York Attorney General Letitia James urged anyone with information on the "blatant act of Islamophobia" to call police.

"Acts of hate and violence against any of our communities will not be tolerated in our city or state," she wrote.

The incident is being investigated by the NYPD Hate Crime Task Force.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
