NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A with a samurai sword punched an officer during a struggle with police on the Upper East Side over the weekend, the NYPD said.
Officers confronted the suspect while responding to calls about a man wielding a katana near Madison Avenue and E. 73rd Street on Saturday evening, police told the New York Post.
The man allegedly refused to drop the weapon and then lunged at officers, according to the report.
The man punched an officer in the face and stomach repeatedly before he was apprehended, police said.
The NYPD tweeted an image of the sword on Wednesday, along with the message: "Wrong century. Wrong period. Just wrong!"
"Following a struggle with the suspect, refusing to drop the weapon, & resulting in injuries to a cop—he was arrested with no injuries to the public," the NYPD tweeted.
The suspect, 33-year-old Wilson Pichardo, faces charges of assault of an officer, attempted assault on an officer, resisting arrest, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon.
The officer was taken to a hospital and has since recovered, according to the report.
