NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police are searching for two sledgehammer-wielding men who broke into an Upper East Side Chanel store and stole tens of thousands of dollars in expensive bags on Sunday evening.

The robbery happened at the Chanel store on Madison Avenue near East 64th Street at about 7 p.m.

The two men grabbed three bags worth $10,000 each and ran out, authorities said.

Lisa, who shops at Chanel, told 1010 WINS that there needs to be greater security at these stores and that the amount of theft in the city is concerning.

“New York is the greatest city in the world, and to have this happen all the time, and especially on Madison Avenue, it's insanity,” she said.

Another Chanel shopper, Karen, said she was “not surprised” to hear about the robbery, “because there's just so many vandals around Manhattan now. I'm surprised they only took three bags,” she told 1010 WINS.

On Monday, the store manager said that it was business as usual, and security guards were stationed right at the front doors.

Police said there have not been any arrests, and the investigation is ongoing.
