NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – A 4-year-old reported missing was found to have drowned in a pond on Tuesday near their family's home in New Jersey, according to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office.

At around 6:45 p.m., Monroe Township police received a 911 call reporting that the child was missing. When officers arrived at the scene, they began searching for the child.

The child was later found in a pond 50 yards from the back deck of the family's home in Monroe and was not breathing, prosecutors said. Police performed CPR and transported the child to Princeton Medical Center, where they were pronounced dead.

"Our hearts are heavy with sorrow as we mourn this tragic loss," Middlesex County Prosecutor Yolanda Ciccone and Chief Griffin M. Banos of the Monroe Township Police Department said in a joint statement. "We extend our deepest condolences to the family during this incredibly difficult time."

An investigation is ongoing.
