
NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — Police are searching for the hit-and-run driver who smashed into an NYPD officer riding a motorcycle on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway on Wednesday morning, killing him, sources told 1010 WINS.
The 30-year-old was riding the motorcycle west near Exit 27 at Atlantic Avenue at about 8:27 a.m. when he was struck by a box truck, police confirmed.
The truck driver sped off, and the cop was rushed by medics to NYU Langone Hospital—Brooklyn, where he died of his injuries.
Sources said that the officer was riding his bike home from work at the time of the collision.
"Devastated by the loss of our brother following an off-duty motorcycle crash in Brooklyn this morning," the Police Benevolent Association said in a statement on social media. "Please join us in praying for his family, friends and co-workers as they deal with this unimaginable loss."
The BQE has been completely shut down at Exit 27 since the incident.
An investigation is ongoing.
