NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The MTA on Thursday announced their plans to deploy a specialized team of officers in an attempt to crack down on fare evasion.

The EAGLE teams, which stands for Evasion and Graffiti Lawlessness Eradication, will be on buses and at bus stops, the MTA said.

According to the MTA, buses have becomes its biggest source of fare evasion, claiming to have lost $315 million from it last year.

"We estimate 30 to 35% of our bus customers are getting off free every day; which means 66% of New Yorkers who are paying their fare are getting a raw deal," NYC Transit President Rich Davey said .

EAGLE officers will be in uniform but unarmed to make sure that the fares are paid.
