Several hurt when NJ Transit bus hits power lines after crash with stolen car

IRVINGTON, N.J. (WCBS 880) — More than a dozen people were injured on Wednesday after a stolen vehicle ran a red light and crashed into a New Jersey Transit bus, sending it into power lines.

The vehicle ran a red light at the intersection of Grove Street and 18th Avenue in Irvington around 7:30 a.m., crashing into the NJ Transit bus, WABC-TV reports.

Reports said around 30 people were on board the bus at the time of the crash.

Videos from the scene showed the bus was sent into a number of utility poles, though it remains unclear if power was lost in any nearby areas.

Around a dozen people suffered minor injuries and all passengers were safely able to exit the bus, reports said.

The driver of the bus, a 27-year veteran with NJ Transit, told WNBC-TV that the ordeal was "a nightmare." He noted that some passengers jumped out of the window of the bus and ran "because of the [downed] wires."

The driver of the stolen vehicle – who is from Newark – was knocked unconscious in the crash, which is why he did not flee the scene, law enforcement officials told WNBC. He was reportedly with a female passenger who also remained at the scene.

Both the driver and the passenger are facing a gun charge after a handgun was found inside the stolen vehicle, reports said. The drive is also being investigated in connection with the stolen vehicle.

It remains unclear if the driver was responsible for the theft.
