EAST ORANGE, N.J. (1010 WINS) — The East Orange Police Department launched an investigation at a YMCA summer camp after 13 children were exposed to suspected mushroom-laced edible products on Thursday morning.
It happened at around 11 a.m. at the YMCA summer camp located on North Arlington Avenue. According to police, a camp counselor spotted a juvenile camper handing out what looked like candy to other kids, violating camp policy.
Shortly after, one of the campers complained of feeling sick, followed by 12 other children between the ages of 10 and 13 who reported similar symptoms.
Emergency medical personnel evaluated all 13 campers at the scene. All were determined to be in stable condition. One child was taken to University Hospital as a precaution due to a pre-existing medical condition.
"This incident is deeply concerning, particularly because it involves the safety and well-being of children," said East Orange Police Chief Phyllis L. Bindi. "Our detectives are conducting a thorough investigation to determine exactly what occurred, how these suspected edibles came into the possession of a juvenile, and whether any criminal offenses were committed."
Officials have identified a suspect, though no criminal charges have been filed yet as the investigation remains ongoing.
"The safety of every child in our care is our highest priority," said Metropolitan YMCA of the Oranges President and CEO Richard K. Gorab in a statement. "Out of respect for the privacy of the families involved, we will not be sharing further details about the children or circumstances of the investigation."
