NEW YORK (BLOOMBERG) -- Flights at New York’s major airports, including John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Newark Liberty International, were disrupted after a technical problem at the air traffic control facility responsible for the airspace surrounding the hubs.
A so-called ground stop was in effect at Newark, LaGuardia and JFK, as well as Philadelphia International Airport and New Jersey’s Teterboro Airport, which handles private jets, according to the Federal Aviation Administration’s National Airspace System Status website.
Philadelphia had average departure delays of about an hour while Teterboro also had delays of more than three hours as of 1:04 p.m. local time on Monday.
The FAA said previously that it was pausing flights at the airports “due to issues with some frequencies at Philadelphia TRACON,” referring to the facility that guides flights into and out of airports in the region.
The Philadelphia facility is the same site that had major technology breakdowns in 2025 that caused multiple disruptions. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy later pointed to the issues in his push for a large-scale modernization of air traffic control equipment in the US.
Technical issues can quickly have extensive knock-on effects for flights. In the UK on Monday, a brief glitch knocked out operations at a crucial center in Scotland, leading to delays. The issue followed two weeks after a massive countrywide disruption in UK airspace.
