KEARNY, N.J. (1010 WINS) — Police found the body of a 33-year-old Jersey City kindergarten teacher in a shallow grave on Tuesday, according to the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.

Law enforcement is investigating Luz Hernandez’s death as a homicide, officials said.

Officers conducted a welfare check on the BelovED Charter School teacher at her Jersey City home after she didn’t show up to work on Monday.

Homicide detectives later found her body in a shallow grave near the intersection of Central Avenue and Third Street in Kearny.

Authorities believe the mother of three may have been missing since Saturday.

The Regional Medical Examiner’s Office will determine her cause of death.

The BelovED Charter School closed Wednesday for a day of mourning.

The administration said counselors will be available for students and teachers.
