NEW YORK (WCBS 880) — The New York Attorney General's Office said Friday it would investigate the death of a woman who was allegedly shot by an off-duty NYPD officer in an apparent domestic incident in Brooklyn this week that also wounded another woman.
The attorney general's Office of Special Investigation will probe the death of Jamie Liang, 24, who police said was shot by off-duty NYPD officer Yvonne Wu, 31. Police have previously said Wu confessed to Wednesday evening's shooting in Bensonhurst.
"Preliminary information suggests that this may be the result of a personal or domestic dispute, without connection to Officer Wu's law enforcement duties," the AG's office said in a press release Friday, while noting, "These are preliminary facts and subject to change."
The AG's office said that under New York law it "assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person, by an act or omission."
"Under the law, the officer may have been on-duty or off-duty," the office added.
The double shooting happened around 5 p.m. Wednesday at 19th Avenue and 79th Street, according to police. Officers at the scene said they spotted Wu in front of the home and said she confessed that she had "shot someone."
Police entered the home and found the two victims, Liang and a 23-year-old woman, with gunshot wounds.
While Liang was pronounced dead at the scene, the 23-year-old victim was transported to the hospital and was said to be in "serious but stable condition" on Thursday.
According to police, the 23-year-old was believed to have been in an "intimate relationship" with Wu at some point and Liang was believed to be in a relationship with the other victim.
The incident reportedly happened at the home of the unidentified victim.
Video released Thursday showed officers at the scene patting down Wu and placing her in the back of a patrol car following the deadly incident.
Police had previously called the case domestic in nature, noting that all women had previously known each other.
It remains unclear when Wu is due in court to answer to the charges. Her attorney information was not immediately available.
