NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City on Friday appealed a Staten Island judge’s ruling striking down a law that would extend voting rights to New Yorkers who aren’t U.S. citizens.

The law would enfranchise almost a million New Yorkers who would be able to vote in local elections like the mayoral or city council races starting next year.

City Council passed the law in January, but a group of Republican politicians led by Staten Island Borough President Vito Fosella filed a lawsuit against it the next day.

The judge found the law violated the state constitution and election law.
