NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — New York City will hold its second annual Asian American and Pacific Islander Cultural and Heritage Parade this Sunday, a year after the parade finally came into fruition following a years-long effort.

Steven Tin, the parade chair, told 1010 WINS that the parade's theme this year, "United We Stand," goes beyond just "strength and unity."

"We want people to be more aware of each other. We want people to be more accepting of each other's culture," Tin said. "We want to bring the Asian community into the mainstream of America, and I say we are part of mainstream America."

Event co-chair Dr. Bindu Babu said, "It's also exposing our culture, our community, our colors, our foods, how we dress [and] how we talk."

"It's awareness as well, so that everyone can share as opposed to looking down at it as the unknown and unfamiliar, which would translate to fear and biases," she said. "This parade is really powerful."

While NYPD crime statistics from last week show anti-Asian hate crimes are down this year compared to 2022, Babu said there’s “no reason for any hate” against the Asian community at all.

"The best thing you can do is support the community," Babu said.

Sunday's parade will be held at Sixth Avenue between 44th Street and 53rd Street.

There will be 20 floats, 100 sports and luxury cars, dancers, music and representatives from numerous nations and organizations.

The parade is expected to start at 12 p.m. and last until 3 p.m.
