NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- New York City will save $164 million next year as part of an agreement it reached with its largest public employee union, Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday.

Under the agreement, the city will not make any payments to certain union funds for current or retired District Council 37 employees through April of next year, de Blasio said in a release.

Two payments will be made in 2022 to make up for the change, the release noted.

The city will also refrain from laying off any District Council 37 employees through June 30 of next year, de Blasio said. The layoff freeze will be extended to June 30, 2022 if the city receives $5 billion or more in state and federal assistance, he added.

District Council 37 represents around 150,000 current employees and 50,000 retired employees, its website says.

"Our public servants have gone above and beyond in this crisis and are continuing to make sacrifices to help us recover," de Blasio said in a statement.

"I thank [District Council 37 Executive Director] Harry Garrido and our partners in labor for coming to the table to help avoid devastating layoffs, but we need our state and federal partners to also step up and provide our city with aid to ensure we can come back stronger than ever," he added.
