NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — An NYPD Highway Patrol Unit vehicle struck and killed a man crossing the Van Wyck Expressway early Sunday morning in Queens, police said.
The 23-year-old victim was on the expressway near Liberty Avenue at about 4:30 a.m., crossing from the eastbound to westbound side, when the police car struck him.
EMS rushed the man to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers in the car were responding to an unrelated 911 call at the time of the collision.
Southbound Van Wyck Expressway was shut down for four hours Sunday morning to accommodate the investigation, and the driver remained on the scene.
The investigation is ongoing.
