NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A man was arrested Tuesday afternoon after allegedly punching an NYPD officer in the face during a seemingly random attack in the Bronx.

Chief Terence Monahan posted video of the attack to Twitter saying, "Police work is unpredictable and dangerous as we saw today when a violent criminal assaulted an officer in front of a station house in the Bronx."

The NYPD said the attack occurred just before 4 p.m. in front of the 40th Precinct stationhouse in the Mott Haven section.

According to police, 34-year-old Clarence Joe passed security barriers outside of the precinct and slowly approached the officer before he "suddenly and unexpectedly punched the officer in the face."

The officer, who was not identified, suffered pain, bruising and swelling to his face but was not severely injured.

Police said when officers searched the 34-year-old they found crack cocaine in his pants pocket.

He was charged with assault on a police officer, criminal possession of a controlled substance, assault and harassment.
