NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) – Two NYPD officers were stabbed and slashed early Wednesday as they apprehended a man who was waving a knife at a Bronx subway station, police said.
The two cops—a male officer and a female officer—encountered the 40-year-old man around 2:30 a.m. on the northbound 5-train platform at the Pelham Parkway station.
When the officers confronted him, he started swinging the knife at them, according to police.
They managed to apprehended him but were both wounded in the struggle.
The female officer was stabbed in the left arm and the male officer suffered a slash wound to his chin, police said.
Both officers were transported to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi in stable condition.
The man, who cut himself in the hand with a knife during the altercation, was taken to the same hospital in stable condition.
He was arrested but was undergoing treatment and a psychiatric evaluation, with charges against him pending, according to police.
No shots were fired and no taser was used in the course of the apprehension, police said.
Both officers are assigned to Transit District 12 in the Bronx.
The Police Benevolent Association union posted photos on X of its members at the hospital.
“At Jacobi Hospital early this morning with our NYPD Transit members who were slashed trying to apprehend an unhinged perp who was menacing straphangers with a knife on a Bronx subway platform,” the union wrote. “Thankful that both cops will be OK.”
