NEW YORK (1010 WINS) — A domestic robbery call in the Bronx Thursday night escalated into a violent struggle, leaving an NYPD officer with a serious head injury and a suspect in critical condition after he was shot by police, authorities announced.

At approximately 9:16 p.m., officers responded to a report of a domestic robbery at 791 Van Nest Ave. in Williamsbridge where a father at the scene told police that his son had just robbed his mother and older brother at gunpoint. The father informed the officers that his son had fled to 1016 East Gun Hill Rd.

Responding officers established a perimeter around the second location and made contact with the suspect, who came to the door and denied being the perpetrator. Officers then waited for the NYPD's Emergency Service Unit to arrive. During this standoff, officers heard three gunshots from inside the residence. The suspect then attempted to flee the scene by running out the front door, according to Chief of Patrol Philip Rivera.

A struggle ensued as officers attempted to take him into custody. During the altercation, an officer fell backward, hitting his head, and sustaining a serious injury. An officer then "discharged a firearm, striking the perpetrator twice—once in the lower back and once in the right arm," Rivera Rivera said during a press conference early Friday.
A loaded firearm was recovered in a bag the suspect was carrying. The entire incident was captured on the officers' body-worn cameras.

The injured officer was rushed to NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi with a serious head injury and is reported to be in stable condition. The suspect was also transported to the same hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
According to police, the suspect is known to the NYPD and has a significant history of violent criminal offenses. The investigation is ongoing.
