NYPD union sues man who hurled racist remarks at Asian-American officer

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- An NYPD union has filed a lawsuit against a man who was caught on video hurling racist remarks at an Asian-American detective last month.

The Detectives Endowment Association filed a lawsuit against the man, identified as Terrell Harper, on behalf of NYPD Detective Vincent Cheung on Tuesday, the New York Post reported.

Police body camera footage shows Harper directing a racist rant toward Cheung during a march in Greenwich Village on March 11.

The lawsuit "looks to force Harper to explain why he targeted the detective with the hate speech," the outlet reported.

"This city is in a crisis of violence and in a crisis of hate," Detectives Endowment Association head Paul DiGiacomo told the Post. "No citizen should be subject to hateful racist slurs whether they are wearing a uniform or not."

Cheung plans to donate any proceeds from the suit to an "Asian aid society or anti-Asian hate society," he said.

"All I care about is the apology," he told the outlet.

Harper has not been hit with any criminal charges in connection with the incident, according to the outlet.
