NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A British Airways Concorde, the fastest commercial aircraft in the world and an imposing crown jewel of the Intrepid Museum in Manhattan, was lifted away Wednesday to undergo renovations.
Over a three-month period, the plane will be stripped down to its bare metal, and outfitted with a new coat of paint, before coming back to its perch along the Hudson River looking good as new. In the space cleared up by the Concorde's departure, officials are hoping to renovate 4,000 square feet of Pier 86 into public parkland.
