NEW YORK (1010 WINS) – Three large skeleton statues were unveiled in Times Square Monday to celebrate the Mexican holiday of Día de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, which takes place this week.
The colorful statues, known as catrinas, are a symbol of the holiday celebrating and honoring people who have died.

According to the DOT, the vibrant figures "serve as a reminder of the beauty and reverence of life and death, bringing a significant piece of Mexico's rich traditions to the heart of New York City in Times Square Plaza."

They were installed by the city Department of Transportation in partnership with the Times Square Alliance, the nonprofit Mi Casa es Puebla, and the Mexican Consulate.
The cartrinas will be on display all week in Times Square, with the main festivities set for this Saturday, Nov. 2, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the plaza between West 45th and West 47th streets. Several altars will also be installed on Nov. 2 for the celebrations.
