NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The NYPD's hate crime task force is investigating after a man who ran up behind a Hasidic Jewish man in Brooklyn last week and snatched a traditional hat from his head, police said Sunday.
At about 6:15 p.m. on Friday, a 27-year-old victim man was walking on Wallabout Street and Marcy Avenue in Williamsburg when the suspect ran from behind, grabbed the hat, known as a shtreimel, from atop of his head, according to officials.
The suspect ran off with the hat, which is worn by Hasidic men on Shabbat and during holidays and is worth about $8,000, authorities said.
He was last seen wearing a hooded sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, police said.
