NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- A man who advanced on officers with a knife as they responded to a domestic dispute in Brooklyn on Tuesday afternoon was shot and killed by police, NYPD officials said.
The suspect allegedly called the mother of his children while en route to her location and threatened to kill her, police said. The kids were inside his vehicle at the time of the call.
The victim called 911 to report the situation and told officers that the suspect was known to carry weapons like machetes and hammers.
“She reported that he was angry because another man had been watching their children, and she stated that she believed he was on his way to kill her," NYPD Chief of Housing Charles McEvoy said.
The woman who made the call met officers in the lobby of 108 Christopher Ave., part of NYCHA's Glenmore Plaza in Brownsville, and led them upstairs where the suspect was.
According to police, the 25-year-old man was inside the unit with multiple children when officers arrived.
“Within seconds of entering the apartment the man brandished a knife from his waistband and moved toward the officers," McEvoy said.
One officer dispatched his taser, but it was ineffective. The man continued advancing and the second officer dispatched his weapon, striking the man in his chest.
He was taken to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers were not injured but transported to a local area hospital for evaluation. Neither the mother nor children were harmed.
The entire incident was captured on officer body-worn cameras and the shooting is under investigation by the NYPD's Force Investigation Division.
